Probate is a process that happens after a death, where the decedant's debts are paid and assets distributed. This involves a probate court, which decides who should receive the property and what debts should be paid.
Administering an estate usually involves probate and non-probate transfers. The goal of the process is to collect and preserves the estate assets, notify creditors, pay debts and taxes, and distribute the remainder to the beneficiaries of the estate.
The will, if one exists, must be filed so that any potential challenges can be made.
